My 16 yr old son has developed this "rash" on his stomach about 1 week ago. It is now slowing moving around to his lower back and down one leg. It is oval shaped, the outer part is red, the middle is skin colorish. It is not raised at all and has no "bite" marks or pimple like things. It does not itch and he doesn't feel bad. Only other thing is has complained about lately is his knees hurting. But I think that is just because he is growing (6'3" already). I am going to call the doc in the morning but for some reason it is really bothering me.

COULD BE---strep. My son had something similar when he was younger. When his legs hurt to bad to walk I took him to ER.
They found he had strep. He NEVER complained of a sore throat, just the two symptoms you listed.
Good luck.

That is what I was thinking, but after researching it the rash looks nothing like a strep rash would look. Hopefully that is it and it is nothing that could be serious.

Just talked with someone on the phone for about an hour about this. Almost sure that is what this could be.

It could just be heat rash.

I would say it's the herp. but I don't want you to hunt me down and whoop me.... so I will concur on Strep. Strep is also actually dangerous if left untreated... So good move on calling the Doctor. Hope he feels better soon.

I am no doctor- but I am 1000% sure it is not a heat rash. I am going to post a pic in a minute.

Here is a pic- not a great one though. You can not feel the rash whatsoever and each one has like a "thumb" print in the middle.

OUCH! You are right that isn't heat rash. I have been pulling up lots of online pictures since seeing your pic. Most seem to come from dermatological online pages. It could be folliculitis from poorly disinfected pools or hot tubs, but to me it looks like some form of fungus. Many types can easily be caught from towels, gyms, pools etc. during the summer. Either way take him to see your doctor! I wish you the best of luck hun.

I would agree it has a fungus look to it.... Has he been swimming lately? That could do it... Do you have a cat? Could be ringworm....(also a fungus)

pm LPPT - she can tell you about Lyme disease. I believe she described exactly what those spots look like on your son.

I would strongly suggest talking to LPPT

We talked last night for about an hour.

He hasn't been swimming - really hasn't done much this summer. We have a cat but he is an outdoor cat and my son hasn't even seen him in a while.

Hopefully the doc can give me an idea.

I had the exact same thing! It was only on my torso area....and a little on my legs..... Come to find out...it was an allergic reaction to something I ate.... The dr's came to the conclusion that it was strawberry ice pops that I was eating...and the preservatives or something in it. I told the dr that I had been eating them for years...and nothing... I stopped eating it...and tada......

If it is Lyme disease he will develope other clinical symptoms.
Joint pain
headach
fatigue
fever
flu like symptoms

Lyme disease is diagnosed on clinical symptoms, test for it are unreliable.

My first thought when looking at it is that it is the hives. Is it real itchy?

Just got back from the doctors. They have NO idea what it is (2 doctors looked at it) so they referred us to a dermatologist and we are going tomorrow. It is not itchy at all. I brought up Lymes Disease and atleast they didn't think I was crazy. They said that is very rare here in Georgia but until he has other symptoms no need to test for it. Should the dermatologist not know what it is, they will start doing blood work. Hey B- hope you and C are alright. J is wanting to come over and play with C soon.

Not Hives or any type of allergic reaction. It does not itch and he doesn't even notice they are there. Not contact dermatitis either. Is is not raised - just flat. you can't even feel it.

He doesn't have any a fever (yet) and his knees are sore one minute and fine the next (which to me is growing pains). But the doctors did say if he developed a headache, fever, fatigue, or flu like symptoms to let them know immediately.

LPPT- the doctors didn't think the dermatolgoist could biopsy it because nothing is raised? But I will find out tomorrow I hope.

Have you tried to going on WebMD and doing the symptom checker? When the little "body" thing comes up you can check skin and put in the symptoms. Sometimes it's pretty useful and then other times it can scare ya to death. Good luck.

Shingles usually travel in a triangle and they cause pain. His is just scattered and no pain at all.

I have checked the WebMD site but can't really find anything that matches it.

Flat, painless, non itching, clearing in the center, no matter the size or shape is basicly a lyme rash.

I wish more doctors and people were familiar with it in this state.

I've been a dermatology nurse for about 5 years and that looks like pityriasis rosea to me. Pityriasis rosea is an asymptomatic rash that is usually found on the trunk, but can spread to extremities. The dermatologist can do a "punch biopsy" (which is a biopsy where they remove a 3mm piece of affected tissue and send it off to the dermatopathologist for testing) even if the rash is not raised. It is very simple to do-one small injection to locally numb the area and then patient feels no pain. The cause of pityriasis rosea is unknown, but the rash is not dangerous. Good luck and let us know what it is!

Here is a website that has some info:

True--and you typically see tinea versicolor on the upper body (upper chest, upper back and upper arms) more so than lower trunk. What derm are you guys seeing? If you don't mind me asking. smile.gif
