Jess's thread last week about stroganoff got me wanting some. So on my way home from drsmileybugs today, I stopped by Patak and picked up a few things, including a pound of really nice beef stew meat. (I'm sure there's equally nice meat at West Metro! wink.gif I just happened to be over by Patak's.)

Anyway, I came home and started stroganoff in my crock pot. It turned out SO WELL, I just had to share the recipe.

Ingredients:

1 lb beef stew meat
1 pkg. instant onion soup mix
1 can beef broth
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 8 oz. container sour cream
1 Tbs corn starch
2 Tsb water
Egg noodles

Place stew meat in crock pot. Add onion soup mix and beef broth. Cook on low heat for about 6 hours. Turn crock pot on high and stir in one can cream of mushroom soup. Cover and cook 1 hour. Stir in carton of sour cream, recover, and cook for another 20 minutes. Mix 1 Tbs corn starch with 2 Tbs water until smooth and stir into crock pot (this will thicken up the sauce). Cover and cook another 10-15 mintes. Serve over noodles.

Oh!! This turned out SO YUMMY!! And the meat was so tender you could cut it easily with a fork.

Thanks for the idea, Jess! wink.gif

Thanks for posting this!

My husband loves stroganoff, but all the recipes I find are really involved!!

I'm hoping to try by the weekend.

You're welcome!! It was delicious and super-easy!

EDITED TO ADD: You could put sliced mushrooms in at the beginning, too, and it would be great. I didn't because my Husband hates mushrooms. wink.gif

Sounds wonderful! I've copied it. But . . . is there something I could substitute for the onion soup mix? blush.gif

I would probably add sliced onions, some cornstarch (it's an ingredient in the onion soup mix) and some garlic powder.

^^What she said...or if it's the onions you want to avoid, you could leave them out and do what she said. But when it's all done, you can't really taste the onion soup...all the flavors get all friendly together to make the sauce!

But sure, I think it would still be good without it!

Thanks. It's the onions I hate.

In that case, I would use a beef consume(sp??) instead of the beef broth with some cornstarch & garlic powder.

If you can, maybe some onion powder?

I made this Tuesday night without the onion soup mix (only because I did not see that in the recipe) and my family loved it.
It is delicious, hubby said wow ,why dont you make this more often?

Here's my spin on stroganoff:

Ingredients:
2-3 Pounds Top Sirloin or stew meat (chopped to bite-sized pieces)
2 sticks butter or margarine
2 red onions (chopped)
1 small package of fresh sliced button mushrooms
2 10.5 ounce cans of tomato soup
2 small cans of tomato paste
Small container of sour cream
Egg noodles

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directions:
1. In a large pot or Dutch oven melt the butter/margarine over med-med high heat
2. Add onions and cook until clear
3. Add meat and brown
4. Stir in soup and paste
5. Reduce heat to med-low
6. Cover and cook for 2-3 hours stirring frequently
7. Add mushrooms and cook additional 2-3 hours
8. Before serving empty container of sour cream into a mixing bowl. Take a small bit of stroganoff mixture from the pot and mix it into the sour cream. Continue to repeat this step until sour cream is warm. By slowly warming the sour cream it will not curdle
9. Add sour cream mixture to pot and stir well
10. Serve over cooked egg noodles
